A remake of the original The Witcher in Unreal Engine 5
Earlier this month, CD Project Red revealed a number of codenamed projects, including three Witcher games. Today via a Twitter post, one of those projects, Codename Canis Majoris, has been revealed as a fully built from the ground up remake of the original The Witcher title.
CD Projekt Red, along with Fool’s Theory, will develop the remake using Unreal Engine 5, and is in the early stages of development. Still, having CDPR drop its Red Engine over Unreal Engine 5, shows that the company is looking to take things to the next level.
We're thrilled to reveal that, together with @Fools_Theory, we're working on remaking The Witcher using Unreal Engine 5 (codename: Canis Majoris)!
We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details.

“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” stated by Adam Badowski, Head of Studio, CD Projekt Red, in the recent annoucement post.
“Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”
With Canis Majoris revealed, and Codename Polaris was already mentioned as the next installment of The Witcher, that leaves Project Sirius as the last unknown Witcher game that has yet to be revealed. Though, something tells me that by the end of 2022, we’ll know more about that title as well. Unless the company is waiting until 2023 to reveal more about either game, I’m sure we’ll hear and possibly see more Witcher during the 2022 The Game Awards show.
