One of the oddest picks for a character in MultiVersus is Morty. He’s weak as a bruiser, doesn’t deal a lot of knockback with most of his moves, and can be ineffective. However, Morty does have a few assets you can utilize. Here’s a MultiVersus Morty guide to help you succeed in battle. But first, get that Szechuan sauce ready.
Standard moves
The first move in Morty’s arsenal is a laser gun that can be used as a combo. It can be used by a simple tap of the square button (X) The fifth or sixth projectile that hits your opponent will have more damage at 6-7%, while smaller shots are 3%. It works similarly to Fox’s shots, as he can’t move and shoot.
If you don’t have a grenade in your possession, the laser will turn into two snakes horizontally; these are awesome for knocking out foes and surprising them. If you delay the shot of the lazer, the snakes will move vertically instead. The lazer projectile will also automatically fire towards a grenade if one is active on the battlefield. You can try to set up traps for your opponent, but to be honest, it’s very predictable for someone to predict.
Sideways and square (X) will have the strange teenager perform a combo with Armothy, and then a Hammer Morty. After two arm swings, he will then bat your foe with a hammer. This is one of Morty’s best knockback tools as you can charge the last hit of the combo. It does around 12% of damage, showing that Morty is not the kind of character to rack up damage points for the team. He’ll need someone like Bugs Bunny or Shaggy to bolster that percentage for him.
Sideways and square (X) in the air does a feeble axe swing that has poor knockback. We were able to hit the move three times in the air outside the arena, and we still weren’t able to knock out a foe at around 70-80% of damage. It only does 3% of the damage as well, so don’t overly rely on this attack. If you can link a smash attack (down and square/X), however, it can be a good tool for a combo.
Up and square (X) from the ground has Morty use his lazer gun again. With just a tap, it does cause 7-9% of damage and can be a less effective uppercut (but you’ll be lucky to land it unless they’re in the air). You can also unleash the snakes that fly through the air, but they seem to activate at random points. Maybe you’ll get lucky. Up and square (X) in the air will have Morty use the power of fire as he equips an elemental ring to hit opponents upwards and ignite them. It does a fantastic 10% of damage or so after you land the attack and burn the foe. It has okay knockback, but it is way more effective than the axe swing.
Morty unleashes his plumbus on the ground when you hold down and square (X) together. He can move while performing the move, and every hit you connect will weaken the opponent. It’s hard to land, but the best you can usually do is around x2 if you’re lucky. However, it has another use. You can also cleanse your allies of their status affliction, making it multi-faceted. The same input in the air will have Morty strike the opponent downwards with Armothy; this has a wide range and can spike foes effectively.
Special moves
With how crazy the show Rick & Morty is, it makes sense that Morty’s special moves are all over the place. His first attack by pressing triangle (or Y) is a grenade throw. You can hold down the button to change the trajectory of the shot. Unfortunately, this projectile does not explode on impact, and there’s a timer on them. They’re very easy for opponents to spot and avoid. However, if they’re in the vicinity of the grenade, you can shoot one with your lazer gun to make it explode. However, it only causes 5% on each grenade, so it may not be worth the trouble. They don’t even cause ignite, which is a shame. Hopefully, Player First Games can patch that in to make the grenades more useful.
Sideways and triangle (Y) brings upon an earth pillar from the ground. When held, you can see a white circle hovering on the ground. This is where the pillar will appear. If you’re able to hit a foe with it, you can cause an x2 weakened debuff, which can help you and your ally to eliminate a foe. If you’re able to hit an earth pillar for the second time, it will stack two more weakened ailments on your opponent. Striking a grenade with a pillar will also cause it to split into two.
Inputting sideways and triangle (Y) while in the air will give Morty a portal. Before using the portal, Morty will gain armor, making this a fantastic way to recover from the abyss. You can aim it for the best route back to the stage. In addition, you and your ally’s projectiles will gain speed if they pass through the portal.
Up and triangle (Y) will call forth a spaceship that moves vertically through the sky. Be careful, however, as this recovery tool can eliminate you if you stay too long on it. This applies to your teammate and enemies as well. This may be a magnificent way to take out an opponent if they’re stunned as the spaceship keeps moving up. Most of the time, when foes are on the spaceship, they’ll be able to move off it just in time.
Need some healing? The Temporal Back-Up with down and triangle (Y) creates a save point, and then after a few seconds, Morty will revert to that position. Morty and his ally will also get a small health boost of around 5% as well. We can see this as a great tool for off-stage antics, as when you revert back to the original point, you’ll recover to the stage. If you’ve played Paladins before, it works similarly to Talus’ ability.
Something else that makes the Temporal Back-Up useful is that it can save your teammate from ringing out. Instead of Morty warping back to the point, they will appear instead.
Effective Perks for Morty
- I’m More Than Just A Hammer lets Morty swing multiple times while using the Hammer Morty at the end of a combo. This gives him more of an aggressive punch and the attack has great knockback.
- Deadshot will give Morty an additional 5% increased damage with projectiles, which are the character’s main tools in battle.
- Percussion Punch Power lets the teenager push out 5% more damage when attacking foes horizontally.
- Tasmanian Trigonometry makes up for Morty’s main weakness: a lack of knockback. The whole team with this perk will give the team 15% more knockback influence. If a partner has this on as well, it’s a massive 25%.
