The Story
Volume nineteen of Watamote starts off with Tomoko and Nemo heading to Summer-ket! Rather than look at books, they find a drama CD that has a rather erotic tone to it. This leads to them checking out a voice acting class as well as a light novel class. Tomoko feels that it will help her out in her new endeavor… becoming a “V-Toober.”
We get a couple of episodic chapters… one of which is Tomoko and Tomoki enjoying soda in a bag… yes… you read that correctly. After that, the gang spies Cunnie and follows the car. We finally learn who that dog’s owner is all while getting the ever-popular “beach episode.”
Next up, Nemo and Tomoko want to organize a study session at Tomoko’s house but a typhoon ruins their plans… but that doesn’t stop Yuri from coming over. Not wanting to go home, Yuri ends up riding out the storm at Tomoko’s house while they study and watch movies together.
We wrap things up with the return of Sasaki-san! She still looks down on Tomoko; however, Tomoko has eyed her to be a virgin… and calls her out on it! This leads to the two of them further increasing their dissonance with one another but all of that comes to a “head” when clay gets involved. I’d give you the “dinfo” but I’m sure with this series, you can imagine where it’s going.
Characters
All I have to say is that Tomoko is really comfortable around people now. Just having friends has really transformed her. She was even able to do a live voiceover recording (nothing official) with a bunch of people watching and didn’t even flinch! When she read the wrong line, she ad-libbed everything and was very natural at it. Nemo even went along with it which helped things but it’s nice to see Tomoko really putting herself out there and not just being a nervous wreck all the time!
Yuri and Tomoko bonded a bit more (well, her and Nemo did, too). Even though she warned Yuri of the typhoon, she opted to stay which was rather cute. You can tell that their level of friendship is deepening but the same couldn’t be said for Sasaki. They still mix like oil and water and while I won’t spoil the outcome of their little clay session, it was a little bit satisfying to see how it all played out.
Final Thoughts
Summer is over and the kids are back in school. They did foreshadow some stuff coming up when it comes to the typical cultural festival. The fact that Tomoko wants to make a movie for it is pretty bold, daring, and not like her at all. That’s a wonderful thing to see but knowing her, we can all predict what kind of movie it’s going to be. Prepare for lots of genitalia, sexual innuendo, and other embarrassing facets… but somehow, I think she’s going to come out on “top” and not remain at the “bottom” on this one!
Outside of that, they didn’t really tease much for the future. There was the mention of college again which I still think is the end game for this series but we will see. Another good read with some decent humor at first but the humor this series is really known for picked right back up at the end!
