With Marvel mostly hitting it out of the park with its first three slots of live-action shows, there’s a lot of pressure on the next round to do well. The next three in the line-up will be of characters who have not yet made it to the silver, or small, screen in live-action. Moon Knight is set to premiere shortly, and now we have our first real look at the second contender, Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel follows Pakistani-American teen Kamala Khan navigating life and love in Jersey City, NJ. She’s a serial daydreamer, who is constantly fantasizing about being a superhero. She gets her wish when she puts on a magic bracelet and gets a slew of cosmic powers. But will saving the world be all its cracked up to be?
Iman Vellani stars as Kamala, Matt Lintz as the best friend Bruno, Aramis Knight as Kareem, Laurel Marsden as frenemy Zoe, Saagar Shaikh as her brother Amir, and Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur as her parents. Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer, Nimra Bucha, Alyy Khan, Alysia Reiner, Fawad Khan, Mehwish Hayat, and Anjali Bhiman have been cast in additional roles.
It is a bit disappointing to see that the show is changing Ms. Marvel’s power to be more vaguely mystical rather than being a shapeshifter. There also isn’t any mention or reference to the Inhumans, likely because the series for ABC did so badly. Though we do see a shady government organization, and a four-person team, briefly in the trailer. Maybe a resurgence of SHIELD? Maybe even SWORD? We will have to see. Either way, it looks like the plotline will follow at least some of the beats of the original comic, so at least fans have that to look forward to.
Ms. Marvel premieres on Disney+ on June 8, 2022.
