Starting in July 0f 2021, Square Enix began releasing remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games. And now, this month, we’re getting the pixel remaster of one of the best titles in the series, Final Fantasy VI. Square Enix announced on Twitter earlier today that the fantasy role-playing game will arrive on February 23rd for Steam, iOS, and Android.
Square Enix summarizes what players can expect with Final Fantasy VI via press release:
Originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, Final Fantasy VI captures all of the magic of the original with improved ease of play. Players will embark on a timeless story following The War of the Magi, which left little but ashes and misery in its wake and magic itself vanished from the world. A thousand years later, humanity has rebuilt the world relying on machines and technology – until they find a young girl named Terra with mysterious powers. The evil Empire has kept her enslaved in an effort to harness these powers as a weapon, leading to a fateful meeting between Terra and a young man named Locke. Their harrowing escape from the Empire’s clutches sets in motion a series of events that touches countless lives and leads to one inevitable conclusion.
The sixth entry in the long-running fantasy series is famous for its wide roster of characters you play as and for its infamous villain, Kefka. For North American players, Final Fantasy VI is also known as Final Fantasy III, due to three earlier titles not being released outside of Japan until later.
The pixel remaster version has a few quality of life updates. These include updated pixel graphics, an updated sountrack by composer Nobuo Uematsu, improved gameplay options, and supplemental extras. These extras consist of a music player, illustration gallery, and bestiary.
Players who pre-purchase the game on Steam can get limited edition wallpapers, special bonus tracks, and a 20% discount. This promotion actually extends for a limited time after the game’s release, until March 10th. Pre-purchase Final Fantasy VI for Steam here for access to the promotion, which also extends to a bundle including the first five pixel remasters as well. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster will also be available via the App Store and Google Play.
Now that Square Enix has finished up their series of pixel remasters, they’re looking towards a reimagining of the first game entitled Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin which will arrive on March 18th.
