It’s something none of us ever expected. Following on from his role as Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, actor Idris Elba will be strapping on the gloves of Knuckles The Echidna in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
Elba took to Twitter to reveal his role in the film, shocking the entire internet in one simple tweet.

Reactions from members of the video game industry have all been relatively similar to my own, which is a shocked silence at how on earth they managed to get Idris Elba to voice a Sonic The Hedgehog character. Given the fact Daniel Craig is leaving as Bond after the eventual release of No Time To Die (When that still remains to be seen, given the current Covid situation and the number of times the film has been delayed already), many were expecting and hoping that Elba may take a role in that franchise, but this announcement seems to rule that out.

Recently, we saw set photos taken directly from the set of the video game movie sequel that seemingly shows off the design of both Knuckles & Tails in the film for the first time. Quite famously, the original design for Sonic in the first movie was met with ire and a collective hatred from the internet at large before being redesigned for the final release, so we can only hope that they’ve learned their lesson from the previous film and Knuckles will actually look like he does in the game.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is currently slated to release on April 8th, 2022. The movie will feature returning cast members Ben Schwartz (Sonic The Hedgehog), Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik), James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), and Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski). In addition to this, Miles “Tails” Prower is set to make his first live-action appearance, although we don’t know the actor cast in the role as of yet.
