The long-awaited return of Samus in Metroid Dread is just a few months away and Nintendo dropped a brief but juicy trailer that was filled with cryptic and exciting teases for what is in store in this new adventure. Right in time for the franchise’s 35th anniversary, the new trailer was filled with references to what came before and a lot of references for eagle-eyed fans to latch onto.
There isn’t a whole lot to glean from the trailer as far as what the overall story is (which is how it should be) but it dropped just enough to build even more hype. We got a few glimpses of Samus’ mentors and caretakers, The Chozo. Along with a shot of Samus looking at some hieroglyphics depicting her large chicken-like allies in what looks like some kind of peril. Chozo lore is always a treat because we seldom get a lot of it. It has always been given to us in bits and pieces so more is always exciting.
Some other very exciting blink and you’ll miss it moments were some of the nods to Metroid Fusion, the last game that takes place canonically before Dread. The zoom by pretty quickly but some of the shots included were Samus covered in her suit from that title as well as a very creepy image of the central antagonist the SA-X. It wasn’t a secret that Metroid Dread was a follow-up to Fusion, but these glimpses further confirm that we’re going to circle back and revisit some of those events potentially in a series of flashbacks.
Metroid fans have a lot to be excited about over the coming months. It’s great to see the franchise coming back with a true vengeance. We’re still a handful of months away from release but this new trailer will surely be analyzed to death between now and then.
Metroid Dread comes exclusively to the Nintendo Switch on October 8th, 2021, and releases the same day as the updated Nintendo Switch OLED model.
