If you’re the owner of an Xbox Series X, Xbox Series, or just someone using an Xbox Series controller for your Windows PC, you may have noticed that the controllers randomly disconnect. No, there’s nothing wrong with your console or PC, not to worry. Instead, the issue lies with that new controller in your hand.
A surge of Xbox Series X|S owners have experienced the random controller disconnecting and voiced their frustrations to Xbox. Originally nothing was said, which only frustrated those who were encountering the disconnects, including myself on both my Xbox Series X and PC. Eventually, Microsoft got involved and admitted that they were aware of the issue and would address this in a future update.
At Microsoft, we put all of our products through rigorous quality assurance testing and are committed to providing customers with an unparalleled gaming experience. We are aware some players may be experiencing disconnects with their new Xbox Wireless Controllers and our teams are actively working on a solution to be included in a future update. For the best experience, we encourage customers to update to the latest controller firmware by following the steps posted here or visiting https://support.xbox.com for assistance.

You may also want to make sure you’ve updated the Xbox controller firmware as well.
Update: Microsoft has provided an update to the issue, so be sure to do either of the following.
For those using the Xbox Series X|S controller for WIndows, be sure to make sure you have the most recent Windows update. You can find available Windows updates by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. There may be a button that says “View optional updates,” and you may be required to select it there to find the update.
Then make sure you’re using the latest Xbox Series X|S controller firmware update by launching the Xbox Accessories app.
For the Xbox Series X|S, an update was released that addresses the issue in the Xbox System Update that was released in March 2021.
Lots of Xbox news this week, but in case you missed it we released our March Xbox System Update yesterday.
In addition to the new features, this release also fixes many of the controller disconnects players have reported.

These updates should address any Xbox Series X|S controller issues you were previously experiencing. However, if they don’t, there are still two workarounds. The first being to use an Xbox One controller. Sure, it’s not as updated as the new controllers, but they work without disconnecting. The other workaround is to connect the Xbox Series X|S controller via a USB cable. Yes, it defeats the purpose of a wireless controller, but it does fix the issue.
