The Japan NPO has opened up a building, called the Tokiwa-so Project, to help aspiring manga artists make their dream a reality. This sharehouse complex comes with private rooms for creators to live in as well as shared spaces for collaborations. The complex will also contain resources to help all kinds of mangaka from budding artists to serialized artists.
The building is not the first of its kind. It existed before in Tokyo’s Toshima ward and helped develop mangka of the past, including the legendary Osamu Tezuka, Fujiko Fujio, and Fujio Akatsuka. Some claim that the original complex was the birth of modern manga production.
Living in the new complex is also very affordable. Each room already comes furnished and rent ranges anywhere from 38,000 yen ($346) to 42,000 yen ($383) per month with an addition 12,000 yen ($110) fee for utilities and internet.
The plan is to have 29 rooms available at the start with more opening up in the future.
