The Nintendo Switch has been doing a lot with their franchises over the first four years of the consoles life, but there have been a few key omissions as of yet that have left a few puzzles. One of them being Mario Kart. Now, yes, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is on the system and is in fact their best-selling game on the platform, which no doubt Nintendo loves. But, a true sequel, Mario Kart 9, has not been announced or even teased by the company. And while the sales of Deluxe are great, one could argue that bringing in 9 soon would replicate that success by all of those gamers coming over to the new title.
For those hoping for a Mario Kart 9 announcement soon, you might be in luck. A rumor has emerged from Nintendo insider Zippo who states that a certain team might be working on a certain game…
“I’ve heard multiple times that Yabuki’s team are hard at work on a new Mario Kart of some sort, and have been for the last three years,” said Zippo, speaking about Mario Kart 9. “I also made sure to specify that this project wasn’t Mario Kart Tour, Live Circuit, or the Universal theme park ride.”
Zippo was clear to state that the game in question might not be Mario Kart 9, but that the possibility is there. And given that there’s already a mobile game via Tour and Deluxe isn’t likely to get DLC 4 years after release, it’d make sense that it’d be a brand new title.
His projection states that it could come this holiday season or early in 2022. Which would line up with a potential announcement at E3 2021, which we know Nintendo will be at. If we hear more we’ll let you know!
