While Harrison Ford will return for the next installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, because how could he not, the rest of the principle cast will see new additions. Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen join Indy’s upcoming adventure in new roles. Waller-Bridge is known for creating the play and TV Show Fleabag and for producing the TV Show Killing Eve. Mikkelsen has starred in a slew of films, notably the James Bond film Casino Royale.
Interestingly, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg took inspiration from James Bond when creating Indiana Jones. Most notably this led to Sean Connery, the original James Bond, starring as Indiana Jones’ dad in the third film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. While Spielberg directed the other films, the fifth entry will see James Mangold take the helm. Mangold previously directed Ford V Ferrari.
Mads Mikkelsen recently expressed his excitement at joining the franchise, Collider reports:
“I’m very, very excited about it… I rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day, it is so well-done and so charming, and it’s such great storytelling. So yes it’s a great honor to be part of that franchise that I grew up with… I’m in a lucky position where they let me read the script before. And yes, it was everything I wished it to be, so that was just great.”
As the film starts production, Indiana Jones 5 is currently slated for a release next year in 2022. Unrelated to the film, Bethesda recently announced that an Indiana Jones game with an original story is in development.
