As part of their full-year financial report, KADOKAWA announced a plan where they are looking to produce 40 new anime shows per year going forward. Of course, they won’t be doing all of the work themselves. They will utilize their different partners which allowed them to produce 33 shows back in 2020, showing that it is, theoretically, possible to increase the number to 40.
This comes on the heels of KADOKAWA purchasing a majority stake in J-Novel Club, granting them access to their entire library of light novels. They announced that they are looking to hire 100 more editors to help expand the number of series owned by KADOKAWA from 5,000 to 6,000.
They also saw a 22% increase in sales from their Bookwalker brand as well. All of this totaled a 2.6% increase in overall sales and a 114.6% increase in operating profit in 2020 compared to 2019. While most companies were left reeling from the pandemic, manga and light novel publishers thrived due to more people spending time at home and doing an old-fashioned and time-honored tradition called reading a book.
