PS5 Resident Evil Village Demo With Ray Tracing Enabled Performs Better Than Expected

Resident Evil Village

Ahead of the release of the Resident Evil Village demo for the PS4 and PS5, Capcom has released detailed resolution and frame rate information. It was stated that the PlayStation 5 version of the game with ray tracing enabled would hit 4K at 45 frames per second. However, according to videos from both VGTech and Digital Foundry, it seems this isn’t the case.

In two different versions from two different outlets, it was noticed that thanks to pixel counting that the PS5 version of Resident Evil Village with ray tracing enabled does indeed hit 60 frames per second.

Head to the 7:33 mark in the first video and 7:53 in the second. In both videos, it’s shown that the console is indeed capable of surpassing the 45 frames per second that Capcom revealed.

As to why Capcom is claiming only 45 frames per second, I can only assume this is due to the experience not being a constant 60 frames per second. Adding to that, if they stated 60 frames per second and people saw drops, they would notice and hold Capcom accountable for that. So it’s likely Capcom is playing it safe, and the game will see performance dips as low as 45 frames per second when 4K and ray tracing is enabled.

On the other hand, disabling ray tracing affords the PlayStation 5 with a locked 60 frames per second. It begs to ask why they didn’t Capcom introduce a dynamic resolution for the console versions like they’re doing wiht the Stadia version.

Resident Evil Village releases on May 7, 2021, for  PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
