In Outriders, you have the ability to dismantle items to get access to shards that possess certain attributes that you can use in your gear. However, at first, it seems like breaking down items to get those shards is random, but I’m here to assure you that it is. This guide will show you how to identify which shards you’ll end up with every time and it could help you also make some extra scrap along the way.
How do you know what shards you’ll end up with?
When you look at a piece of gear, it tells you which type of shards you’ll get. For example, look at the screenshot of the Helmet of the Space Legion, below. At first glance, you can see the attributes or bonuses assigned to the gear. Next to the status power is an icon. This is the type of shard you’ll get from dismantling the item. The amount of shards you get is proportionate to the percentage of the bonus it provides. You can also see this by accessing the details on the item, which gives you an expanded look at it.
All gear will give you one type of shard by default.
Things change, however, when you get a piece of gear that has expanded bonuses or if you’ve started to pump shards into them. When you dismantle these pieces of gear, you’ll be provided more shards.
In this screenshot, we see the Forest Helmet which has a shard icon next to all of the bonuses it provides. When this piece of gear is dismantled, it will provide anomaly power, cooldown reduction, and status power. All of which are perfect for a Devastator class who’s gone full melee.
Being able to understand how the dismantling system works and how you get specific shards can also help you with earning scrap, the in-game currency. Instead of randomly dismantling items, you can dismantle for the shards you need and sell off the rest of the unneeded gear. You can’t sell shards, but you can sell gear that has shards you don’t need or what.
How can I see how many shards I have?
When you visit your character’s inventory, the resources management section sits at the lower-left-hand side of the screen. Just below the weapons section. Here you’ll see how your resources and how many you have; scrap, leather, iron, titanium, challenge tier currency, and shards.
You’ll notice that the shards don’t show anything. This is due to there being a large number of shard types. To see just how many shards you have, you’ll need to hover over the shards icon and wording. Doing that will reveal all of the shards you have collected and how many you have.
This is helpful when you’re upgrading and modifying your gear. In this example, I have plenty of everything except for cooldown reduction – the one stat I really need a lot of. Hopefully, this guide helps you to better understand how the dismantling and shard system works and help you from dismantling gear that could be better off by being sold.
Outriders is available for the PS4, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia, and PC.
