Square Enix has had enough and has squashed any rumors on the company looking to be sold or acquired. Yesterday, Bloomberg’s report surfaced, which closely translated stated several potential buyers were looking to acquire Square Enix. This, of course, sparked several debates on Twitter, Reddit, and several other websites. I was even in on the talk, but I was the more level-headed and preached that the company remaining a 3rd party would be in everyone’s interests.
Today, Square Enix released a press release that clears the air that Square Enix is not looking to be sold, nor is it entertaining any offers to be acquired.
Bloomberg has reported today that there is interest from several buyers to acquire Square Enix. However, this report is not based on any announcement by SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO., LTD. We do not consider selling off the company or any part of its businesses, nor have we received any offer from any third party to acquire the company or any part of its businesses.
Square Enix has affectively killed this rumor, and at least for Square Enix, we can close this chapter of the nonsense.
Truthfully, I’m glad Square Enix came out and did what it did. Way too many conversations were started, too many possibilities of something going wrong crept into the forefront, and I was scared for gamers everywhere. Sure, it would be great for a majority of others; Xbox, PlayStation, or even Nintendo. But that’s it.
All those Square Enix games that Xbox recently picked up could be erased; Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Nier. Sony could be the sole benefactor of all Square Enix games. Xbox could take possession of one of the biggest Japanese publishers on the planet. Those are just a few examples.
One platform would have gained if one of the big three was able to acquire the company. While two others would have been left out, and that’s something that shouldn’t be. The same goes for any other major 3rd party company. So yes, I’m glad this was a rumor and that the rumor is done.
We’d love to know how you feel about this? Are you happy the rumor is over? Or did you want Square Enix to be acquired? Let us know in the comments.
