Given that the global pandemic has been crippling things all over the world, it’s not surprising that movie theaters as a whole haven’t been “up and at them” even with the vaccines being distributed. However, things may have started towards a key turning point, and with an unlikely source at its center. Godzilla vs Kong has not released in the US as of yet (that’ll happen on the 31st), but it’s released in the rest of the world and like the beasts themselves, it’s dominating.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the global box office total of Godzilla vs Kong right now stands at $122 million. FAR more than anything that has opened in the pandemic box office era that we’ve been in for months now. It doubled what Tenet did in its debut back in the latter half of 2020 and again, the US totals haven’t come because it hasn’t released.
The biggest part of that global box office total was China, where over $70 million of that total came from. This could be a huge thing going forward because if China is back in action and the US can get itself back in the running, then that means that the box office might just be saved in time for some other major films to arrive like Black Widow, Fast 9, The Suicide Squad, Dune and more.
Godzilla vs Kong arrives in the US on the 31st both in theaters and on HBO Max.
