It seems like an eternity ago that a Superman movie graced the big screen. And indeed, it technically was, as 2013 was when Man Of Steel came out and started what is known as the “DC Extended Universe” of films that include Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam, and upcoming films like The Suicide Squad and The Flash. Despite all those films coming out though over the course of many years, fans have wondered why there wasn’t a Man of Steel sequel. Well now…we MIGHT be getting one.
Deadline reports that a “Superman Reboot” film is in the works with famed writer Ta-NNehisi Coates doing the script and the movie being produced by J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot company. The latter of whom is already working on several projects for DC Comics right now via certain upcoming TV series on HBO Max like Justice League Dark and John Constantine.
There is scant details on this movie, but one thing that hasn’t been made clear is whether this is a “hard reboot” like The Batman movie with Robert Pattinson, or a “soft reboot” like the upcoming Flash film which many feel will “reset” things for the future.
A key quote though comes from Coates though:
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” Coates told Shadow and Act in a statement. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.”
Hearing Coates say DCEU is a curious thing because that would seem to indicate that it’ll be “In-canon” with the rest of the DCEU movies and thus Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill would return. But again, this hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Cavill has noted many times that he WANTS to come back to the Superman role in another solo film and even says he has the “costume in my closet”. So we’ll just have to wait for more details on whether he’ll get the chance to don the “S” once more.
