Another PlayStation State of Play has come and gone, and if you blinked, you likely missed it. Below are all the trailers and updates for the games shown during the event. There were ten games in total, all shown within the 30 minutes of the show.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
While we already knew that Crash Bandicoot was getting a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, this was reinforced during the State of Play event. Key features here are the 60 frames per second at 4K resolution, DualSense support, and faster loading times.
Returnal
I never get tired of looking at House Marque’s upcoming PS5 title, Returnal. During the event, we were provided with a new trailer that featured new gameplay. The game now has a release date of April 30th, 2021.
Knockout City
EA’s and Valen Studio’s upcoming Dodgebrawl title, Knockout City, is getting another beta, this time with crossplay support a new stage. You can check out our impressions of Knockout City from the previous beta here.
SIFU
When I first saw SIFU, I called it the “Daredevil fighting simulator” due to that corridor fight scene. Anyone who’s seen the Netflix Daredevil TV show knows exactly what I mean. SIFU features a gameplay mechanic that will age you every time you’re defeated in battle. Adding this one to my list of “must play PS5 games.”
Solar Ash
A new look at Solar Ash from the developer of Hyperlight Drifter. There’s still no release date for the title. While I’m getting tired of this art style, I’m still excited for this game.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach
Something, something creepy vibes and still no release date, but a 2021 release window.
Oddworld: Soulstorm
During the State of Play event, new footage of Oddworld: Soulstorm was shown, and it still looks like an interesting title, but I’m not quite sure of the gameplay. A release date of April 6th, 2021, was also announced, and it will be free for PlayStation Plus owners as well.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Ah, yes, I’ve been waiting on this. Kena: Bridge of Spirits also received a new trailer, full of new gameplay and luscious graphics and gameplay. A release date of August 24th, 2021, was announced and will include a playable copy for the PS4 and PS5.
Deathloop
Perhaps one of the final Bethesda games heading to a PlayStation title, Deathloop featured a stylish James Bond-ish trailer. The gameplay looks damned fun, and I loved the funky music. This is still a PlayStation timed exclusive for consoles and releases on May 21st, 2021.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade
Ah yes, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. At first, I thought we were getting news on the Final Fantasy VII Remake part II. Instead, we’re getting a new chapter that will take place during the remake events instead. Featuring everyone’s favorite Materia thief, Yuffie.
A new version of Final Fantasy VII Remake for the PS5 was announced in addition to the Intergrade announcement. This version will feature improved textures, lighting, fog, and load times. It will be a free upgrade to anyone who owns the PS4 version, and save data will also carry over.
Ultimately, it’s not all good news, as FFVII Intergrade is a PS5 exclusive. You’ll need to either purchase the PS5 version or upgrade to it. The FFVII Intergrade DLC/addon will not be available for the PS4.
Here’s the link to the full stream, but if you watch the trailers, you’ll get the same experience and won’t have to wait to see what you want.
Thoughts
While I wasn’t expecting PlayStation to announce a surprise State of Play suddenly, I was expecting more. While the Final Fantasy VII Intergrade news was new, outside of a few release dates, everything shown was already talked about before. In that regard, I felt that this event was lackluster. At the same time, it’s my own fault for expecting more.
Here’s to hoping PlayStation’s next event will have the stuff that we’re all looking forward to
