The Story
With the Seichi arc over, it’s time for a brand-new arc to begin. Ranmaru from the Seiryu Gate Clan shows up and demands to speak to Kyutaro. One of his subordinates, Ishiki, shows up and attacks Fumi thinking that by making Ranmaru bow before her, it was an act of hostility. After Koichi shows up and breaks up the fight, they ask Ranmaru to come back alone after he states that he wants to talk about the snake.
Part of the snake has been sealed inside of Kyutaro and, somehow, the Seiryu clan knows about it. It was even brought up at the clan head meeting which raised some concern with the Genbu. After meeting Ranmaru, we learn that the white cat gave the Seiryu clan leader a message that he passed on to Ranmaru as his final words before slipping into a coma. Apparently, his other son and heir to the Seiryu clan, Aoi, has a snake inside of him as well, and that reaching out to Kyutaro might end up helping them out. It is believed that the two snake pieces will leave the body and join as one and it might be a way to save Aoi and/or Kyutaro but there are many grave risks involved.
What is more troublesome is that the seal they thought was placed on Kyutaro’s snake has already been broken and as soon as that realization comes to pass, well, I’m sure it doesn’t take a vivid imagination to know what happens to Kyutaro. Fumi ends up entering their personal mind vault where she finds Kyutaro but is confronted by part of the snake. Using the power of the white queen, Fumi is about to use that power to kill the snake until it begs and pleads for its life. Shockingly, Kyutaro is willing to make a deal!
I thought that this arc would turn its attention back onto the Bug Handlers; however, this was a great follow-up arc to the Seichi arc. It built upon everything that arc established and gave us a fresh new story that is really interesting! Although, I think that it was pushed a little too quickly but, then again, I am a fan of slow burns and I don’t exactly know how long this arc is intended to last so who am I to complain?
Characters
Lots of development here and most of it was centered around Kyutaro and Fumi.
First thing’s first… those two are seriously in love! So much so that you wish the two of them would just get a room and get it over with! Because of Kyutaro’s love for Fumi, his character has done a complete 180 since it began back in QQ Sweeper. Kyutaro is less strict and more lenient with Fumi, constantly kissing her and making she is well taken care of. Kyutaro’s true feelings are really shining through but it doesn’t mean he has gotten any weaker. He still has the strength to protect her as he did with Ishiki tried to attack them when Ranmaru visited.
On the Fumi side of things, she is accepting of Kyutaro’s love and definitely loves him back but she has also gained a bit of confidence when it comes to her being The True Queen. While she’s still a bit uncertain of her powers, she’s definitely not afraid of them anymore. When she goes into the mind vault to look for Kyutaro, she does so without any fear or hesitation. When she confronts the snake, she wastes no time in bringing out a blade that has part of The White Queen’s power embedded in it. Fumi has really grown since the beginning and has such a strong will and resolve now! Still, she remains sweet and innocent out in the real world!
Ranmaru got the respect beaten into him as he should! If you don’t remember, he was the one who kidnapped Fumi in order to draw out the power of the Queen from her. A huge battle erupted with Kyutaro rescuing her. The Genbu and Seiryu clans have been at odds for a while and even more so since that incident so many volumes ago. After the incident with Ishiki, Ranmaru was properly neutered and respect was paid which allowed him to have the conversation about his father, Aoi, and the snake with the Genbu clan. He selfishly asked for help and even though the was turned down, he still walked away a changed person… that we could see.
Final Thoughts
This was a great start to a brand-new arc and it does a wonderful job building off of everything else that happened so far. I like how they intertwined the Seiryu clan into this arc as it allowed us to learn more about the snake. While they initially thought that there were multiple snakes, it appears that there is only one and it has been divided into multiple parts. (Why am I getting a Ten Tails from Naruto vibe here?)
Now that we know of Kyutaro and Aoi being part holders, the question remains if there are only two parts to the snake or if there are others? From the way the dialogue was written, it seemed as if the snake has more than two parts out there which makes you wonder if there are other clans who are holding parts of the snake or if they are just scattered out in the world? More questions of how these people inherited a snake part are also raised that we don’t have the answers to yet. I’m not sure if this arc will end with the eventual confrontation between Kyutaro and Aoi but, to me, this seems like another long arc in the making.
Looking forward to what this arc brings as this one looks really good!
