Xbox Series X upgrades for Gears 5 detailed

By Poch SaldanaNovember 3, 2020

Thanks to the team over at the Digital Foundry, who is going to be incredibly busy during the next couple of weeks I’m guessing, we now know what exactly is changed with the Series X version of Gears 5.

The 16-minute video goes into meticulous detail about the general improvements but the main highlights include:

  • Dynamic 4k/60 FPS in the campaign (low of 1080p and high of 4k with the average hovering around 1728p)
  • Higher fidelity shadows and reflections
  • Improved texture resolution on-par with the Ultra preset on PC
  • Stable 120 FPS in multiplayer
  • Drastically shortened loading times
  • Variable-rate shading implementation which helps general performance
  • Dynamic latency input improves overall responsiveness

Since they don’t have a Series S on hand, John Linneman and the Digital Foundry team were not able to test out what that machine offers in terms of upgrades to the previous versions of Gears 5 with the budget-friendly console. However, they were able to confirm with developers that the game would also run at a dynamic resolution that ranges from 720p-1440p. It should also be noted that some features that aren’t currently present on PC, such as improved bump mapping, will be available for PC users at a later date.

Gears 5 is out now on Xbox and PC and the upgraded version will be available day one when Xbox Series X|S launches on November 10.

Big fan of games, writing, and writing about games! Two things Poch will always stand by--the Vita was ahead of its time and the world is a better place with a new Rhythm Heaven on the horizon.
