Unofficial PS5 faceplate seller shut down by Sony

Who didn’t see this coming?

Previously we reported that the company formerly know as PlateStation 5 was selling PlayStation 5 faceplates, ahead of the PlayStation 5’s release. Now, Sony has stepped in and has forced the company to stop selling these faceplates.

According to VGC, a representative from PlateStation 5, now known as Customize My Plates, has confirmed that Sony has threatened legal action against the company. Requiring them to change the company’s name as it was too similar to PlayStation and to stop selling the faceplates. As such, the company has canceled any orders that were already pre-purchased. I happened to have ordered a faceplate and as of yet, have not received my cancelation, but due to the recent action, it’s only a matter of time.

“Before we launched, we did our due diligence and were of the opinion, that because Sony only had pending patents on the faceplates there would be no problem,” “But after only a day of our website being live, Sony’s lawyers asked us to change our name (at the time PlateStation5), due to trademark infringements. We thought this switch would be enough to keep everyone happy, and honestly were hoping so since we were already underway with our product development, CustomizeMyPlates stated in an email to VGC.

When we first reported on the announcement of this company, we did mention that they were not affiliated with Sony PlayStation and that there might be some issues with these faceplates. Sony isn’t taking any chances, and as we’ve seen in the past, they don’t like it when other companies infringe on their products.

As for Customize My Plates, while they are no longer selling replacement faceplates, the company is now selling skins for both the PlayStation 5 and the DualSense controller. Though, this puts them firmly in the sights of Dbrand, a company that’s known for selling customized skins for various consoles, tablets, laptops, and more.
