When the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario franchise was announced, fans wondered what would come our way. Our answer was many games both digitally and physically, and the cherry on top in many ways was Super Mario 3D All-Stars. This title brought together Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy together for people to play. And oh boy, did they want to play it.
We already noted before how the NPD data for Super Mario 3D All-Stars was very impressive, including being the 10th best-selling game in the US so far. But all of those numbers didn’t include digital sales. Now though, Gameindustry.biz did the math and apparently, the game sold 1.8 million copies digitally.
This is significant for two major reasons. One, it means that the game is already a success just by the digital numbers alone, and two, this is the BIGGEST digital success for Mario ever. Beating out Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Maker 2, and Super Mario Bros U Deluxe.
While we don’t have final numbers, it’s fair to say that it has likely sold over 3 million copies, if not 4 million, so far. Which isn’t bad for a re-release of several other titles.
