Star Trek is headed to a channel it’s never been to before: Nickelodeon. Announced at NYCC 2020, Star Trek: Prodigy will be aimed at teens, following a group of kids who take up piloting an abandoned starship. And yes, this is the animated Star Trek project that was announced way back in February 2019. But perhaps most exciting of all, Kate Mulgrew is coming back as Captain Kathryn Janeway, serving as a mentor to these would-be space explorers as they explore new worlds and strike out on their own.
Mulgrew said during the panel that she was excited to be getting back in the captain’s chair:
“I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”
Alex Kurtzman talked about how Captain Janeway was different from the Trek captains that came before her:
“Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters, but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she.”
There hasn’t been any other casting news for the project at this time.
Star Trek: Prodigy will likely air sometime in 2021 on Nickelodeon.
