In an age when comic adaptations are coming out faster, and mostly better, than ever, it shouldn’t be surprising that Lumberjanes is getting its turn on screen. The Eisner-winning Boom! Studios series is getting an animated show set to premiere on HBO Max.
Lumberjanes follows the adventures of April, Jo, Mal, Molly and Ripley, five friends who spend their summer at the strangely named Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thilstle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. But there’s supernatural happenings afoot, and our intrepid heroes must use their brains, brawn, and bravery to win the day. Launched in 2014, the book was created by Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis and Brooklyn A. Allen, and has run for over 70 issues and 13 graphic novels.
Along with announcement of the show, we got a quick look at the art style and character design for the show:
Stevenson will executive producer and be the showrunner for the special and the series that follows it. She’s already developed some TV chops having worked as the showrunner for the highly popular She-Ra and the Princesses of Power that ran on Netflix. The series was first optioned as a feature film for FOX in 2015, but that plan unraveled after they were bought by Disney. While animation has been less affected by the COIVD-19 pandemic, there’s no tentative date set yet for the release of the series.
