Olivia Wilde to Direct a Female-Led Marvel Movie at Sony

Sony is not slowing down its plans to work on films in collaboration with Marvel. Case in point, the studio just hired director Olivia Wilde to direct a female-led movie in the universe of Spider-Man. While no specific character has been named for this project, many believe the film will center around the character of Spider-Woman.

The script will be written by Katie Silberman, who wrote Wilde’s other film Booksmart, and will be produced by Amy Pascal, who has worked on all the Tom Holland Spider-man movies as well as Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel. All three will be working together for a currently unnamed buddy comedy holiday movie for Universal, so they’ll have some practice working as a team.

Spider-Woman seems like the most likely candidate as Sony has already talked about other Spider-Man universe women getting their own movies. Director S.J. Clarkson was tapped to direct a Madame Webb movie and Sony is already developing Black Cat and Silver Sable movies. Wilde’s movie could also be about Ghost Spider/Spider Gwen, but given she’s such a big piece of Into the Spider-Verse, it seems unlikely. And of course, we don’t know if the Spider-Woman they will go with will be Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, or Jessica Drew. But maybe we’re in for an even bigger surprise once more details come out about the film.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
