Crash Bandicoot is back, and it’s about time. Get it? The name of the game is Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, see what I did?
Ok, moving on, a brand new game in the series will see the return of some familiar baddies; Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy, and Uka Uka. They’re back and they figured out a way to cause all sorts of bad stuff with space and time continuum. So it’s up to Crash and the crew to stop them. Taking place right after Crash Bandicoot: Warped, this new chapter will also *checks notes* features a plot twist that retcons several titles from the series. I suppose that’s one way of doing away with less than favorable games.
Toys for Bob, the developer of Crash 4 has stated that this is not a remaster and that this game is all new. While Crash Bandicoot – N. Sane Trilogy was remastered for a new area of gaming, its roots were still planted in years gone by. For Crash 4, this will be a reboot of sorts, as everything is being reworked.
While the trailer shows that the game still has the same charm that made the game so lovable, it will possess a bigger array of tricks. This is Crash Bandicoot envisioned as a new game, with new challenges, yet with a pair of familiar marsupials that many of us grew up with. While the art style will be modern and exaggerated, it will also still be familiar to longtime fans of the series.
Speaking of marsupials, Crash won’t be the only one that’s playable as Coco is now joining in on the action, as will Neo Cortex will be playable. Who’ll be pacing ah a ray gun of sorts and a lack of jumping ability as a way to provide a different style of gameplay. New gameplay mechanics will also be introduced, such as wall-running, swinging from ropes, and more.
There will be new masks as well, called the Quantum Masks, four to be exact. We already know about two of them, the gravity mask called will allow characters to switch up gravity and provide some upside-down platforming. While the time mask, Kapuna-Wa, has the ability to slow down time and help escape nearly impossible obstacles. The other two masks haven’t been spoiled just yet.
Toys for Bob is also changing up the game engine and will ditch the custom game engine that Vicarious Visions used to N. Sane Trilogy and is developing the game with Unreal Engine 4. Which is what they also used when they worked on Spyro: Reignited Trilogy.
So far the game is shaping up quite nicely. Fans of the series are finally having thier prayers answers with a new Crash engine in over 10 years. I’m guessing the reception Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy was better than expected and helped paved the way for this title. More classic games being brought into the modern era is great in my book. Here’s to hoping the gameplay, while changed quite a bit, will still retain that Crash Bandicoot feeling.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will release on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this October 2nd, 2020.
