While the Nicolas Cage series National Treasure had one great movie and a less successful sequel, word has swirled for a while on whether a third movie would come along. There’s still a big possibility, but for now it looks like National Treasure is stealing a spot for itself on TV streaming platform Disney Plus. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer sat down with Collider and explained that while a third movie is being considered, a TV show for Disney Plus is in the works. In the interview, he confirmed both projects and explained how they’ll differ:
“We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”
Bruckheimer also confirmed that the pilot script for the TV show has been finished, with the other episodes outlined. As for National Treasure 3 to be directed by Jon Turtletaub, the script is still being written. It looks like while NicolasCage will return for National Treasure 3, he won’t play a starring role in the TV series, unless they decide to go with a time-jump cameo.
No word yet on when either the National Treasure series or third movie will release, since both are still in development. However, Nic Cage fans can look forward to seeing the actor in a scripted CBS show based on Netflix’s Tiger King documentary series.
