A sequel to the original Deadly Premonition seemed like a lofty goal back in 2013, a return to the quirky and intricate world Greenvale, Washington was on a lot of people’s next-gen wishlists. Though the hype for the game has seemingly come and gone, a sequel has been in the works for quite some time. Even with original director SWERY65 at the helm, it’s weird to see it being so undercover.
However, it seems that the cult fanbase is finally getting its day, July 10th 2020. Nintendo released a trailer announcing the release date for the next installment in the series. “Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise.”
The new game is set to serve as both a prequel and a sequel, taking players to both the real-life city of Boston and a fictional town of Le Carré in Lousiana. Where players again take control of Francis York Morgan and his “imaginary” friend Zach. The set up is fairly familiar to those who have played the first game, with another serial killer on the loose and a menagerie of weird monsters roaming the town.
The original game gained its cult following from it’s weird and surreal story beats and urban American charm. Which begs the question, how do the things that happen in Deadly Premonition 1 affect the sequel? The ending is a pretty world-shattering event for both the player and its hero.
SWERY65 is known for his quirky and bizarre plotlines, resulting is fairly immersive and attention-grabbing set pieces. Though sometimes he misses and creates something like D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, a nonsensical episodic adventure that got canceled before it’s completion after poor sales.
Deadly Premonition was a very character-based experience, so it’s unsure how a sequel could invest gamers in Francis Morgan again, now that they have unraveled the mystery behind his bizarre actions/habits. You can have a man talk to his cup of coffee and weird me out once, but if he does it again after explaining his rationale, I’m probably just going to ignore it.
Details on the game are scarce at the moment, despite it releasing in less than three months. Radio silence can mean a lot of things. It could be like Death Stranding, and attempting to preserve the mystery, but it’s equally as likely that its publisher doesn’t have a lot of faith in it. SWERY has also exhibited some… odd twitter tendencies.
Guys, Again. I don't want to have any message over DM on twitter.
I'll block you if you send me without permission.I can't be confident that those who don't read this tweet are my fans.#SWERISM #DarkSideSWERY
