Last year was a big year for The Game Awards, not the least of which was because of the worldwide viewers who helped make it a success. But, to start off the show, Geoff Keighley shocked the world by bringing out Reggie Fils-Aime, Shawn Layton and Phil Spencer, the heads of Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft respectively, to give a unifying message about gaming.
Such a thing had never happened before, so it was a very big deal. But, as Keighley noted in a Reddit AMA, it wasn’t easy. It took a lot of planning, and it almost didn’t happen a few times.
“It was a dream of mine for a long time — since the first show. I asked all three of the guys personally and they agreed to do it, but it did take months of negotiations to make it happen. A few days before the show I thought it had fallen apart and I was really sad. But then magically it came back together. Producing these shows is always an emotional rollercoaster, but I’m really proud of that moment, and glad I was able to help make it happen.”
