For all you Halloween fans, this treat is no trick. Disney+ is developing and will be producing a sequel to the insanely popular Hocus Pocus.
Variety reports that the famous 1993 will be getting a new sequel on Disney’s new streaming platform. Jen D’Angelo, who wrote and co-produced Workaholics, is onboard to write the script. As of right now, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are not signed on to the project but they may be later on in the process. There is no other cast announced for the project yet.
If you’ve never seen the original Hocus Pocus, the cult classic follows three teens in Salem, Massachusetts who end up awakening a trio of witches called the Sanderson Sisters, played by Midler, Parker and Najimy. The witches must suck out the soul of a child in order to remain on Earth and so the movie is a race to get through the night.
It’s almost surprising that Disney hasn’t tried to do this sooner. Hocus Pocus is a massive hit for them, with people watching it every fall at alarming rates. However, I’m not sure how well it’s going to do if they can’t get the original Sandersons, especially given that so many people love them for their chemistry. Still, there might be enough good will for the sequel to do well regardless.
There is no tentative date yet set for Hocus Pocus 2, but Disney+ will begin streaming on November 12, 2019.
