For the longest time the team behind the PlayStation 3 emulator, RPCS3, have been trying to get Demon’s Souls running at it beyond 30 frames per second. Which was a task as the game was designed to run at 30fps? However, they’re ones to never say never and have done what was seemingly impossible. A patch has been created and now the game can be played at both 60 and 120 fps!
In a new milestone not only for RPCS3, but the souls series in general. Whatcookie recently made a patch for Demon’s Souls (DeS) allowing it to bypass the games 30fps cap and run at 60 and 120fps for the first time! Marking the first time any souls game has ever reached 120fps!
However, there are currently a few issues, pre-rendered cutscenes will only display the very first frame of the video and if you’re running the game at 120fps and run into geometry the players movement will be very slow. The cutscene issue isn’t that big of an issue for DeS due to the game only having a couple pre-rendered cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game so playing at 60fps will still yield a fun experience. While 120fps isn’t recommended unless the movement issue gets fixed. And even then, it is quite difficult to hit 120fps at high resolutions e.g 4k currently.
I’m sure every Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls are bounced off the ceiling regarding this new development. That said, there is one drawback. This new method only works with the disc version of Demon’s Souls. So it won’t work with the PSN download. Still, if you rip the disc version you should be fine.
I haven’t had a chance to implement the patch since I’m at work. However, once I get home and do daddy and husbandly tasks, you better believe I’ll be attempting to get this to work. Demon’s Souls was the gateway drug that got me addicted to this sort of gameplay.
For those who already had a version of RPCS3, you’ll need to update to the latest version, otherwise, this patch won’t work.
Oh, yeah, can’t wait to give this a try.
