‘One Day at a Time’ Saved by Pop TV

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 27, 2019

Four months ago, Netflix announced to much outrage that it would be cancelling One Day at a Time after its third season. Fans and celebrities all cried out for networks to come swoop in and save the show. Well, one finally has! Pop TV, a channel owned by CBS and responsible for fan favorite show Schitt’s Creek, will be producing the show’s fourth season.

As reported by Vulture, the network has ordered a 13-episode season for a 2020 premiere. While the first three seasons will remain on Netflix, Pop TV will be able to use those episodes for promotional materials. Additionally, CBS will do an encore run of Season 4 once it has finished on Pop TV. This is one of the few examples of a streaming show getting a second life on cable.

Brad Schwartz, President of Pop TV told Vulture how excited he was to get the show on his network:

“When we looked at the success we’ve had with Schitt’s Creek, we felt that was because of how it championed love and kindness, and how it has a lot of emotion mixed with a lot of heart and comedy. And when you look at One Day at a Time, you see it does the same [thing]. They deal with inclusion and love and acceptance and family. They pull on your emotions and they make you laugh. There are such parallels to what helped Schitt’s Creek break through on Pop…Pop is now the home to two of the most critically praised and fan-adored comedies in all of television, bringing even more premium content to basic cable.”

Also, Season 4 will not be the final season, with Pop TV hoping it can continue the show for several more years. It is assumed the whole cast will be back to reprise their roles.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
