Nintendo has revealed that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development, in a surprise reveal at the end of the E3 Nintendo Direct presentation.
Very little is known about the project at the moment, but we do know that it’s a fully-fledged sequel to Breath of the Wild, featuring the same characters and world. It looks like the sequel will have a darker tone than the first game, and this, in combination with the game using the same engine with the same art style, makes the Majora’s Mask comparisons all too obvious.
The teaser didn’t even give us a title, simply stating “The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development.”
While this is clearly a monumental announcement for the Nintendo Switch, the game is still very early in development. Metroid Prime 4 was announced in a similar fashion two years ago, and that game has been notoriously absent from Nintendo’s lineup since, even restarting development entirely from scratch earlier this year.
The teaser poses some interesting questions, but we won’t be getting any answers anytime soon. At least we’ll be able to get our Zelda fix when Link’s Awakening launches later this year.
