Sony has laid out their strategy for their next generation platform, The PlayStation 5. The key focuses for them will be on backward compatibility and streaming capabilities. While Sony often stated that backward compatibility would be very difficult due to the nature of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 being built on a PC-like architecture vs the PlayStation 1-3 being built with proprietary components (such as the PS3’s cell processor), Sony said that with the PS5’s new hardware and, particularly, the solid state drive (SSD) they will be including in it, that leveraging compatibility on the PS5 hardware has been faster and more seamless than ever before.
Sony stated that the PlayStation 4’s phase-out period should be around three years. This is how long the company foresees it will take to get users and content creators to shift over to the PlayStation 5. Sony also released a chart about things they’ve talked about with the PlayStation 5 along with things they have yet to mention. They are as follows:
What they mentioned
- CPU
- GPU
- SSD
- Backward Compatibility
- Ray Tracing
- 8K Resolution
- Disc Support
- 3D Audio
What they haven’t mentioned yet
- Date
- Price
- Games
- User Experience
- Country Rollout
Game streaming is another strategy they are focusing on. Sony wants streaming to be a major part of the PlayStation 5. They said that they want to have tech to create a massively enhanced community where experiences can be enjoyed independent of time and place with or without a console.
