During Activision Blizzards’ investment call, CEO Bobby Kotick announced that since 2003, Call of Duty has sold over 300 million copies of games in the franchise. Kotick stated that Call of Duty is one of the most successful video game franchises of all-time.
To give you an idea of just how monumental that is, only two gaming franchises are ahead of it. Those two are Pokemon and Mario. Yes, that means the franchise has sold more copies than The Legend of Zelda!
Over the past 16 years, Call of Duty has released over 30 games on, virtually, every platform including console, PC, and mobile. It is this milestone that is pushing Activision Blizzard to seek out city-based eSports leagues. The inspiration came from Blizzard’s Overwatch League and now they want to bring that level of competition to the Call of Duty franchise. With a history of success like that, it’s a pretty safe bet to assume that an eSports league centered around the franchise would be a huge success.
I know, I know…
In before city-based Battlefield eSports leagues.
