Detective series Veronica Mars is one of the most well-loved by fans, so much so that it broke the record for earning one million, and then two million, on Kickstarter for their movie campaign. Now, Hulu is hoping to harness the power of that fandom to make their continuation of the series:
This short little announcement doesn’t give us much, but it does hint at an older, but still very sassy Mars making her way in the world as a detective. Though the teaser is all attitude, its description gives us the official plot synopsis:
Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the family of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.
Besides series lead Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, and Ryan Hansen will all be returning. There will be new characters as well, played by J.K. Simmons, Patton Oswalt, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.
The focus is definitely on an older, wiser Mars, as Craig Erwich, Hulu’s senior VP of Originals, told critics:
“From what I’ve seen of the show—and I’ve read, and the scripts are excellent—it is very true to the character. It is very true to the world. It’s true to the tone of the show and what made people fall in love with the show, but it is definitely an update. She’s not a young girl anymore. You’ll see her dealing with contemporary issues in a contemporary world.”
Veronica Mars will premiere on Hulu on July 26, 2019.
