While the announcement of System Shock 3 is hardly news, as it had been announced nearly four years ago (2015). The game and the team behind has had a rough couple of months. First the developer, Otherside Entertainment had to buy back the publishing rights from their former partner, Starbreeze. To the tune of $12 million dollars, which isn’t exactly chump change. Then the team parted ways with Starbreeze, back during February 2019.
Since then, we haven’t heard anything about the game. Despite Warren Spector, who had worked on the original System Shock, stating that we’d hear something about the game soon. Well, that all changed today as a teaser trailer for System Shock 3 was released during Unity (game engine) GDC 2019 Keynote. In this brief trailer, we see a look at some of the environment, a few creatures and the ever-looming antagonist of the System Shock series, Shodan.
Honesty, I felt vibes of several classic titles just watching this trailer.
What do we know about System Shock 3? Well, other than it’s being developed with Unity? Only that Shodan is still determined to end all of humanity, however, Warren Spector states that we’ll find out as to why she wants this. She’s damned persistent, I’ll give her that. Not only did she not perish in System Shock 1, but she manages to yet another potential death by imprinting herself onto an unsuspecting crew member in System Shock 2. We’re not sure what to expect in part 3, but I’ve been waiting for this game ever since it was announced. I’m cautiously optimistic and will remain so until we get some more information on the title.
Release date? We likely won’t see System Shock 3 for quite some time. In fact, I’m taking bets on what we’ll see first. The reboot of the original game from Nightdive Studios or this. Does anyone want to take me up on that bet?
