Nvidia is looking to make its largest purchase to date with the acquisition of the high performance computing company Mellanox. The deal will set Nvidia back a mere $6.9 billion. Mellanox and Nvidia are no strangers to each other as they have worked with each other in the past to create database computing technology. They also collaborated on two supercomputers that are used by the U.S. Department of Energy.
“We’re excited to unite Nvidia’s accelerated computing platform with Mellanox’s world-renowned accelerated networking platform under one roof to create next-generation datacenter-scale computing solutions,” said Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang in a statement. “I am particularly thrilled to work closely with the visionary leaders of Mellanox and their amazing people to invent the computers of tomorrow.”
Microsoft and Intel were also among interested parties in acquiring the tech company but it was Nvidia who, ultimately, outbid them in the end. It will be interesting to see what Nvidia does with the company once the sale goes through.
