It was previously announced by Sony that they planned on ending production/shipment of the PlayStation Vita in Japan but they didn’t state when that would be. Historically, they announced the end of the PlayStation 3 in February and canceled it in March. Here we are a few years later and we received the notice that the Vita would end shipments in February and as of March 1, those shipments have ceased. Sony is now two for two!
Final sales figures saw 4,767 units sold between February 11-24. 3,600 of those came after the announcement of Vita’s end. The Vita originally launched on December 17, 2011 in Japan and by February 22, 2012, it was launched worldwide across many other regions.
Hiroyuki Oda, Vice President for Sony Interactive Entertainment, made the statement that there are no plans from Sony to make a successor to the Vita, thus ending Sony’s venture into the handheld gaming market… for now. Who knows what the future will hold for any company?
