Comic book adaptations are getting more popular than ever, meaning even indie fare is getting some time in the spotlight. From Netflix’s upcoming Umbrella Academy show to SyFy’s take on Deadly Class, audiences want more grit and guts than glamour shots for their heroes in TV shows. But what about a show where the people with powers are the bad guys? That’s where The Boys comes in.
The trailer itself is…well it’s a little confusing, to be frank. So here’s the show’s official synopsis to help you out:
In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, THE BOYS centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “The Boys,” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than their blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty. THE BOYS is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and Vought – the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes.
The show is based off of the 2006 comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and the show was developed by Eric Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen. Kripke, who many fans know from his work on Supernatural, will also serve as the showrunner for the first season. The show stars Karl Urban, Jennifer Esposito, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, Karen Fukuhara, Elisabeth Shue, Laz Alonso, and more, with a special guest appearance by Simon Pegg.
In terms of concept, the show has a lot going for it – good casting, a fascinating premise, and the freedom to go to some dark places. Still, the trailer only gives us a few snippets of the action, so it’s hard to tell what the chemistry between characters is going to be like. Hopefully, the next trailer will give us a little more insight into what’s going on and what we can expect.
The Boys will premiere on Amazon Prime sometime in Summer 2019.
