Some Godzilla reboots are more successful than others. 1998’s? Not so much. 2014’s following attempt? Very much so. A sequel was inevitable, and will actually factor into a whole cinematic universe. Despite a delay in release date, this week the trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters arrived in full force.
While the 2014 version featured Godzilla and to a lesser extent some spider-like creatures, this one shifts the focus a bit from the giant lizard to some of his greatest rivals. Classic monsters Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah are showcased in the trailer, which teases an all out monster battle across Earth.
On the human side of things we’ve got Ken Watanabe returning as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa from the 2014 film. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown joins the series as Madison Russell, with Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga starring as her parents.
The trailer mentions that some of these monsters, like Godzilla, will be on humanity’s side, while others will be on the opposition. It’s worth mentioning that Mothra is traditionally seen as humanity’s protector in the series, so we’ll see how this film interprets the mythos.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will arrive as the latest entry in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse on May 31, 2019.
