A lot of announcements were made recently at The Game Awards, and one of the most influential fighting game franchises in history decided to become a part of it. Under the illusion of presenting Best Sports or Racing Game, NetherRealm Studios boss and Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon made his way onto the stage to present the award nominees, but that’s not how things played out.
As you can see from the video above, a familiar blood tipped harpoon smashes through the presentation screen and we are treated to a lightning version of the familiar Dragon Logo for Mortal Kombat, sending the crowd into a frenzy at The Game Awards and millions watching around the world via livestream.
The footage that follows shows a ruined version of the classic Mortal Kombat Monk arena where Scorpion and Raiden facing off in a fight to the finish, which sees the more dark Raiden from the ending of Mortal Kombat X dispatch Scorpion with a thunderous bolt of lightning to the head. What comes next is a bit weird, as an original Ninja style Scorpion from Mortal Kombat 1 makes his way to take down Raiden with what looks to be a fatality, diving through Raiden while on fire before slicing Raiden’s head off and impaling it with his trademark harpoon. A very generic ‘Mortal 11 Kombat” logo appears followed by the release date of April 23, with a community reveal event slated for January 17, 2019. The trailer ends with what looks to be a new character, possibly a god of time, standing next to a hourglass.
While not much is known about the game at this time, the official Youtube video of the reveal trailer gives us some more information in the description:
The all new Custom Character Variations give you unprecedented control to customise the fighters and make them your own. The new graphics engine showcasing every skull-shattering, eye-popping moment, brings you so close to the fight you can feel it. And featuring a roster of new and returning Klassic Fighters, Mortal Kombat’s best in class cinematic story mode continues the epic saga over 25 years in the making.
The video also reveals that if you pre-order Mortal Kombat 11, you’ll get Shao Kahn unlocked right away along with Beta Access (Beta Access only on PS4 & Xbox One in March 2019). Mortal Kombat 11 will be available on April 23, 2019 on Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC & Nintendo Switch.
