Earlier this week, WB Montreal announced that they wouldn’t be at The Game Awards. But that hasn’t stopped them from teasing what they’re working on. The Studio’s Assistant Producer, Valerie Vezina tweeted out an image of an owl along with ‘REDACTED, best DevTEAM EVAR’.
Many people are speculating that the owl represents a Batman ‘Court of Owls’ game. For those of you who are not up to date with Batman lore, The Court of Owls is a group of rich and influential people of Gotham who control the city in the shadows, using experimental immortal soldiers called Talons in order to keep things the way they want them to be in Gotham. Dating back to the early 1600s, The Court of Owls has been involved in everything that Gotham has done as a city. It’s members even included members of the Wayne family, one of the more notable families in Gotham, this includes Alan Wayne, the great-grandfather of Bruce Wayne, helping the group through the building of secret meeting rooms hidden throughout Gotham city. As Batman, Bruce finds out about The Court of Owls and finds one of their meeting rooms, leading to an all out war between the Bats and and Owls for control over gotham city.
This story-line makes for an interesting adaptation when it comes to games as it has a nice mystery and a build to one hell of a climax.
Other members of WB Montreal have also mentioned that they are hard at work with this [REDACTED] game without dropping the same hint that Vezina did.
One thing is sure, though: Fans should not expect an announcement about the title at this week’s Game Awards. If players can assume that such a game is on its way, can they also assume it is potentially a prequel to the Arkham series, as Arkham Origins was? It would make sense to follow up the previous game with one about Gotham’s most secret society, but until WB Montreal make an official announcement, all bets are off the table.
