In the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s less-than-stellar box office, LucasFilm has been re-evaluating its strategy. There were plans for a bevy of solo films, like ones that would tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi and everyone’s favorite side character, Boba Fett. But it looks like the bounty hunter will not be getting his own film, but rather his own TV show.
That’s right, according to journalist Erick Weber, Kathleen Kennedy has officially cancelled the Boba Fett movie but the TV show The Mandalorian is moving ahead:
Kathleen Kennedy just confirmed to me Boba Fett movie is 100% dead, 100% focusing on THE MANDALORIAN #StarWars

The show will be written by Iron Man‘s Jon Favreau, and will be in live-action. There’s not much news beyond that, including any casting news. But that’s not to say that the show isn’t getting the LucasFilm’s all – the company is pumping $100 million into the project. The first episode will be directed by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels). Other episode directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).
Here’s the show’s synopsis from the Star Wars website:
The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
It’s probably a good thing that the film got cancelled, given that the Star Wars franchise has been biting off a bit more than it can chew in the films. Still, it seems like this project has enlisted some talented people to help see it through, so this news is more exciting than sad. Hopefully now that projects are being cancelled, we’ll be getting more news of the upcoming ones and, most importantly, their casts and release dates.
