Chim-Chim-Chirree! There’s a new trailer for Mary Poppins Returns. The film, starring Emily Blunt as the nanny originated by Julie Andrews, is not a remake of the Disney film but in fact a sequel to the 1964 classic. This time the Banks children are all grown up and have children of their own, so as the title says, Mary Poppins returns. While the gap between the original and the sequel is 54 years (!), the film takes place but a mere 25 years after the events of the first. The film also stars Ben Wishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and Meryl Streep.
If you look really closely, you can see Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy in the background. Okay maybe not, but that’d be cool. After all, Disney does own both properties.
However! While I’m sure you noticed that Dick Van Dyke, the original Bert, will appear in the film, you may not have noticed that he’ll actually reprise another role he played in the original. Lin-Manuel Miranda took to twitter to point out that Dick Van Dyke had the second role in the film of Mr. Dawes Sr. In the credits for the original film, he’s credited with an anagram of Dick Van Dyke until the letters unscramble to reveal his own name. This time he’ll play Mr. Dawes Jr. who is the son of the original film’s bank manager.

You have to admit, the original makeup team did a pretty could job of predicting Mr. Van Dyke’s future self. Looks like Mary Poppins isn’t the only one who’s ageless.
Directed by Rob Marshall, the sequel will release this winter on December 19, 2018. Disney has a few more plans to revisit classic films, as remakes of Dumbo and Aladdin are also in the works.
