A fifteen-second promotional video was posted on the official website for Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul series. The video was highlighting the upcoming second half of the Tokyo Ghoul:re anime which is slated to air in October. The ending to this video gives a message to fans which is translated as “The story related to Ken Kaneki, finally concludes” essentially announces that this is the end of the anime series. In addition, the video also confirms in another phrase that this is “the final chapter.”
We know that Sui Ishida ended the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga on July 5 with a total of 181 chapters spread over 16 volumes. Combining this with the parent manga, the Tokyo Ghoul series spanned a total of 30 volumes over the course of its life. The first season of Tokyo Ghoul:re covered the first five volumes of the series, leaving eleven volumes untouched. With the second season only having 12 episodes, the story will either be extremely rushed with some arcs left out or it will go with an anime-only ending.
MyAnimeList.net describes the story as follows:
Two years have passed since the CCG’s raid on Anteiku. Although the atmosphere in Tokyo has changed drastically due to the increased influence of the CCG, ghouls continue to pose a problem as they have begun taking caution, especially the terrorist organization Aogiri Tree, who acknowledge the CCG’s growing threat to their existence.
The creation of a special team, known as the Quinx Squad, may provide the CCG with the push they need to exterminate Tokyo’s unwanted residents. As humans who have undergone surgery in order to make use of the special abilities of ghouls, they participate in operations to eradicate the dangerous creatures. The leader of this group, Haise Sasaki, is a half-ghoul, half-human who has been trained by famed special class investigator, Kishou Arima. However, there’s more to this young man than meets the eye, as unknown memories claw at his mind, slowly reminding him of the person he used to be.
