With great box office success comes the talk of sequels. And with Crazy Rich Asians blasting through last weekend’s box office, it’s no surprise that things are already being set in motion.
However, things are being set in motion very, very quickly. Screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim are already on board to write the script, and the first film’s director Jon M. Chu is also set to return. Main cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh have options for the sequel too, so there won’t be much convincing needed for them to come back. It seems like Warner Bros. was getting ready to put a sequel together in advance of Crazy Rich Asians‘s premiere.
This isn’t as surprising as you think. The book Crazy Rich Asians is actually the first in a trilogy, with China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems as the next books in the series. The new film would be based on the second book, and there seems little doubt that we will also be getting an adaptation of the last book too.
Crazy Rich Asians earned $44.4 million in its first week at the box office, and estimates are that it will clear $100 million domestically. The film follows Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American economics professor who finds out that her boyfriend Nick comes from an insanely wealthy family in Singapore. She must navigate his family, including strict matriarch Eleanor, while visiting for a wedding, and soon learns more about Nick and herself.
