The latest entry into the Predator franchise has undergone several changes in the last couple months. From numerous reshoots to cuts made on the editing room floor, The Predator director Shane Black has so far been abundantly transparent about the changes made. Among the most recent alterations though is an unfortunate one.
Beloved and well-renowned actor Edward James Olmos was originally tied to the project, but in a recent interview, it was revealed that he was cut from the film.
“I’m not in the show though—It was too long so my character, they had to take me out. They were like half an hour, 3/4 of an hour too long. So I understand why. It was gracious of them to call me and tell me, ‘Hey, we really feel bad,’ you know?”
Olmos gave the account of his character’s cut from the film during an interview for his starring role in Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans M.C. which premieres on FX September 4th. The news is unfortunate to say the least, as Olmos’ natural talent on screen generally always makes him a pleasure to watch.
The Battlestar Galactica actor was set to play a high ranking general in The Predator. While this was a minor role in the grand scope of the movie, there are still thirty to forty-five minutes of Edward James Olmos missing, and I can’t help but hold out hope that those scenes will be included in the inevitable director’s cut Blu-ray edition. Make it happen, Shane Black! As disheartening as it must have felt though, Olmos still clearly accepted the cut with a highly professional attitude like the seasoned veteran he is. Although it’s a disappointing decision, it’s quite clear the actor feels no animosity toward Black or the others involved in the final say.
The Predator hits theaters September 14th, and while it will feature a distinct lack of Olmos, the remainder of the star-studded cast will be there to carry the movie to victory.
