Alright, internet, I’m more than *insert noun* enough to admit when I’m wrong And in this case, I was totally wrong about the upcoming DC Comics ‘Shazam’ movie. I just watched the trailer a few times and I’m impressed with what I saw. But more importantly, they are following the source material really close. Or, at least for the trailer they are.
In the trailer, we’re introduced to Billy Batson. Many of you know him as the down on his luck kid from Fawcett City, who just happens to be an orphan. An orphan who’s made a habit of running away from many of his placement homes. In the trailer, we see him being placed into yet another family and making friends with another foster child. Shortly after we’re seeing Billy come to the aid of his newfound foster brother and then starts running for his life. It’s then that Billy encounters that fateful subway train ride to the Rock of Eternity and encounters the Wizard Shazam. Then all the zaniness starts and honestly, it’s a nice take on a hero that doesn’t get that much exposure.
As Strong as Superman, as fast as the Flash and much more, Shazam is easily one of DC Comic’s powerhouses. But thankfully it seems that the film isn’t going towards the grim and gritty nature that many DC Comics flicks are known for. Instead, we’re seeing a family movie starting a very likable superhero. It’s sorta like combining ‘Big’ with a superhero movie. And from what we’ve been shown, it works.
Zachary Levi stars as Shazam and after the trailer, I’m convinced he’s going to do a bang-up job. I can’t believe how much I enjoyed that trailer. Way to go DC Comics! You may be on to something. First Wonder Woman and now this, both films to erase several films that we won’t ever talk about.
Shazam opens in theaters on April 19th, 2019.
