Perhaps the highlight of Sony’s E3 press conference was the reveal of The Last of Us Part II’s gameplay. Sony’s E3 conference kicked off inside a church – it was an odd setting for their conference, but it quickly became clear that the space matched the opening cinematic for The Last of Us Part II. Additionally, The Last of Us composer Gustavo Santaolalla introduced the footage with a live performance of the theme.
Watch the full reveal here:
Before and after the gameplay, a few new characters are introduced, as is a potential love interest for Ellie. A previously unseen character speaks with Ellie at the event and presumably references Joel when he says, “Your old man laid into me today”.
We already knew that Naughty Dog’s sequel would follow Ellie this time around, but it’s great seeing her in action. A new and improved cover system is demonstrated when Ellie ducks under a vehicle to evade enemies. When we last saw of The Last of Us Part II was at Paris Games Week, a trailer was featured that was full of tense and visceral violence. Tonight’s gameplay reveal also didn’t hold anything back, full of violent kills and tense stealth gameplay. We knew that The Last of Us Part II would be present at tonight’s conference, and it certainly did not disappoint.
